When is the Grand National?
The Grand National is held every April at Aintree in Liverpool and has the biggest price pot of any European jump race. The Festival is held over three days, Ladies Day is the Friday and the Grand National is the highlight of Saturday’s racing.
The atmosphere during the three-day festival is electric and we have various packages to cater for all budgets.
The History & Course
The Grand National was first run in 1839 and is run over 4 miles and 514 yards with thirty fences for the horses to jump over. It is one of the longest National Hunt races and is a real test for both jockey and horse, getting round the course in one piece is an achievement in itself. In 1928 only two horses completed the course. Some of the well-known fences include Becker’s Brook and the Canal Turn which require all the expertise of both the jockey and horse.
In 2020, due to coronavirus, the race was cancelled. Around 600 million people throughout the world watch this annual race and it is beamed live to around 130 countries. Even people who are not prone to a bet will tend to have a flutter on the Grand National and will often chose their horse based on colour and name. It is a tradition in the UK in many offices to run a sweepstake. Whoever had backed Mon Mome ion 2009 would have been happy as the horse won with odds of 100-1. It is an extremely hard race to pick a winner as the favourite rarely wins and several horses sadly do not complete the course. Only 7 favourites have won the race in the last 70 years. The greatest number of horses to complete the race is only 23 which was in 1984.
Winners
Red Rum is the most successful horse having won the race three times in the seventies, George Stevens is the leading jockey with five wins and three trainers have each won the Grand National four times. Richard Johnson is probably the unluckiest jockey having yet to experience victory from his 21 rides. Manifesto has run the race eight times which is a record, and this included two wins.
Women Riders
The first women jockey was in 1977 and in 2012 Katie Walsh became the first female jockey to finish in the top three places when she rode Seabass. History was finally made in 2021 when we had the first female winner in Ireland’s thirty one year old Rachel Blackmore who was riding 11-1 shot Minella Times. Blackmore at the Cheltenham Festival became the first women to be the Cheltenham Festival’s leading jockey. A perfect couple of months for the acclaimed jockey!
We hope we have given you a good flavour of the history and records of the Grand National and look forward to you sampling one of our hospitality packages.
