Current Format
The UEFA Champions League format underwent a significant change starting in the 2024/25 season, transitioning to the “Swiss model”. Here’s our overview of the updated structure:
Champions League Group Stage (Swiss Model)
- Participants:
- 36 teams (increased from 32).
- Structure:
- Instead of traditional eight groups of four, all 36 teams compete in a single league table.
- Each team plays 8 matches (4 home and 4 away) against different opponents, determined by seeding.
- Seeding:
- Matches are based on UEFA coefficients and rankings to balance competition levels.
- Teams are matched with opponents of varying strengths.
- Qualification to Knockouts:
- The top 8 teams in the league table advance directly to the Round of 16.
- Teams finishing 9th to 24th enter a play-off round to secure the remaining 8 spots in the Round of 16.
Champions League Knockout Rounds
- Play-off Round:
- 16 teams (ranked 9th–24th) compete in two-legged ties.
- Winners join the top 8 in the Round of 16.
- Traditional Knockout Format:
- From the Round of 16 onwards, the tournament follows the standard two-legged knockout ties.
- Includes:
- Round of 16
- Quarter-finals
- Semi-finals
- The Final remains a single-leg match at a neutral venue.
Additional Key Changes
- Expanded Teams:
- The 36 teams include two additional spots for clubs based on UEFA coefficients (countries with the best-performing teams in European competitions).
- More opportunities for smaller leagues to enter the competition.
- More Matches:
- Each team plays at least 8 group-stage matches (up from 6 in the old format).
- Total matches increase from 125 to 189.
- Revenue Growth:
- More matches mean increased broadcasting rights, sponsorship, and ticketing revenues.
Benefits of the Swiss Model
- Enhanced competition by matching teams of varying strengths.
- Increased opportunity for clubs across Europe to participate.
