Super Bowl History and Facts
The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL) and is one of the biggest sporting events in the United States.
- Founded: The Super Bowl began after the AFL–NFL merger agreement in 1966.
- First Game: Super Bowl I was played on January 15, 1967, between the Green Bay Packers (NFL) and the Kansas City Chiefs (AFL). The Packers won 35–10.
- Originally called the “AFL-NFL World Championship Game”, it was later retroactively named the Super Bowl.
Key Eras
- Early Dominance by NFL Teams (1967–1970)
- Green Bay won the first two Super Bowls.
- The AFL got its first win with Joe Namath and the New York Jets in Super Bowl III, a huge upset over the Baltimore Colts.
- Steelers Dynasty (1970s)
- After the full AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Pittsburgh Steelers dominated, winning four titles in six years.
